MED Talks are the ATA Medical Division’s content-based presentation series, free and open to all Medical Division members! They usually last 60 minutes and are limited to 100 participants.
This MED Talk will be recorded, and the recording will be available for a limited time to all members who register.

Topic: Innovative Inclusion for Medical Minorities: A Comparison of 3 Spanish Medical Dictionaries
Speaker: Pablo Mugüerza
Description: Medical interpreters and translators who work with the English-Spanish language pair are very fortunate, because we have access to several high-quality dictionaries—and, in particular, some that are true benchmarks in the profession. So much so that, apparently, everything in our profession has already been said—and said well.
But medicine continues to advance by leaps and bounds, and the languages in which it is expressed must keep pace. To achieve this, updates must be constant and, in many cases, done “on one’s own,” because the author or authors cannot find precedents for the translation of terms they encounter in their professional practice and must make decisions that, in many cases, are groundbreaking. Particularly, when focusing on minorities-related terminology.
In this MedTalk, I will examine how three of the medical dictionaries we all have in mind address this issue : Cosnautas’ Red Book, the Pan-Hispanic Dictionary of Medical Terms, and mugüMED (Pablo Mugüerza’s Dictionary of Medical Terms).
About the Speaker: Pablo Mugüerza is a Spanish medical translator EN>ES with more than 40 years of experience as a translator, both on-site (McGraw-Hill) and freelance (most of the time). He graduated in medicine in 1987 and since then has worked for the most important translation agencies in Spain and abroad, and for most of the major pharmaceutical companies and CROs. He is an external translator for the WHO in Geneva, Switzerland and an editor for the OPS. He is one of the foremost authorities on the translation of EN>ES clinical trial protocols, on which he has published a highly demanded manual (the 2nd edition sold out in March 2018; currently Working on the 3rd edition). Since 2009 he has presented more than a hundred workshops, courses and conferences in both English and Spanish, in person and online, in many countries in Europe and in North and South America. Currently, in addition to his uninterrupted work as a translator and ENES reviewer for the world’s leading agencies and CROs, he is a consultant for the terminology unit of the Spanish Royal National Academy of Medicine and for Thermo Fisher (one of the world’s largest Health Marketing Research companies).
In December 2024, Pablo presented his own dictionary of translation EN>SPA of medical terms (https://mugumed.com/), a revolutionary, personal work with more than 13 000 terms in May 2026. It is the first self-stated feminist, digital-born dictionary of its kind and the only one posted since the classic previous comparable work, now 25 years old.
He was invited in 2025 as the keynote speaker at the Encuentro universitario de traductores at Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México in September (www.uaeh.edu.mx/ful/2024/programa/profesionales-37/traductores-37) and as a presenter at the medtransconf.com in Mulhouse (France) in October.
Also, in March 2026, Pablo was invited by ITIMedNet as the first non-British speaker for a Presentation about Clinical Trials in London, UK, with a full house and best reviews (www.universe.com/events/clinical-trials-inside-and-out-with-pablo-muguerza-tickets-X1NYF8).
