MED Talks

The ATA Medical Division is excited to announce our second MED Talks of the year on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at 8:00 p.m. ET.

MED Talks are the ATA Medical Division content-based presentation series, free and open to all Medical Division members!

Topic: Interpreting for Palliative Care

Speaker: Daniela E. Obregón

Description: This presentation will examine the meaning of Palliative Care (PC) and the difference between PC in pediatric and adult settings from the perspective of a healthcare interpreter. The presentation will also focus on the importance of differentiating between Hospice and Palliative Care, and how to consider possible translations of these two terms. Palliative Care encounters can be emotionally taxing, linguistically difficult, and highly challenging, so tips will be provided on how to be better prepared for different PC sessions, including self-care.

About the Speaker: Daniela E. Obregón is an English-to-Spanish translator, a certified healthcare interpreter, and holds a master’s degree in Translation from New York University. As a linguist, she specializes in health insurance, clinical trials, and patient and family education. Daniela has presented webinars and workshops to medical providers, including bilingual staff, on how to efficiently partner with healthcare interpreters to improve health equity. She has given presentations about Palliative Care in Nebraska, Oregon, California, and Mexico. Currently, Daniela serves as Assistant Administrator of ATA’s Interpreters Division and collaborates on ATA’s Professional Development Committee.
